It’s actually been over 3(!) months…
since you last heard from me. This time has flown by so incredibly quickly that I’m actually lost for words! The summer in our hotels was wonderful, exhausting, remarkable, extraordinary, cheeky, loud, quiet and brilliant – in other words, just like us humans, and we were finally able to welcome them back into our hotels again. Yes, not all that glitters is gold, and of the 325,000(!) people who have left our industry, some were with us too – and didn’t come back, for a whole range of reasons.
But we in the hospitality industry have only ourselves to blame! (Of course, I’m lumping everyone together here, but exceptions only prove the rule.) If, for decades, you neglect your staff, don’t pay them well, demand a lot and give little in return – well, then this is exactly what happens.
Actually, we have every reason to be very satisfied: we have ‘only’ 10 per cent of vacancies, whilst in other hotels or companies the figure is closer to 40 per cent – but that isn’t our benchmark, is it? So what are we going to do now? A great deal, that much I can promise. We’re tidying up our place, giving it a good wipe-down and reorganising ourselves – together with the people who are already with us and those who are yet to join us. Why do I believe that in future, many people will want to work for us?
